Top 5 Wednesday – Classics I Wish Had Modern Adaptations

+*top five wednesday

The topic this week is a really fun one and got thinking about all the classics that I’ve seen that are modernized versions of those classics.

Here are some of my favorite modern adaptations of classic stories:

Clueless (Emma) – Best 90s movie ever

The Lizzie Bennet Diaries (Pride & Prejudice) – Webseries

Carmilla (Carmilla) – Webseries

Bride & Prejudice (Pride & Prejudice) – Bollywood style

Easy A (The Scarlet Letter)

She’s the Man (Twelfth Night)

10 Things I Hate About You (Taming of the Shrew)

Each of these took the basic elements from the works they’re based off of and added more modernized storytelling to them.

Sense & Sensibility

Sense & Sensibility is probably my favorite Jane Austen story after Pride & Prejudice and Emma.ย I ADORE the adaptation that was made in the 90s which had Emma Thompson, Hugh Grant, and Kate Winslet. I think this would be perfect retold in a much more modern way. I could see this as either a mini-series or a movie. Also make it gay.

Persuasion

Another Jane Austen one because her works are pretty easy to adapt. Although I’ve ever seen any adaptation of Persuasion. From what I’ve researched there’s been 4 which is honestly a low number compared to the number of P&P, S&S, and Emma adaptations there have been. I think Persuasion deserves a fresh, modernized take. I think a Netflix movie would perfect for this.

Frankenstein

I would LOVE to see a modern day Frankenstein story. I can’t imagine who I’d want to do it, but probably like HBO or Netflix.

The Great Gatsby

I know the APPEAL of The Great Gatsby is the fact that it takes place in 1920s America and that’s the biggest factor of the story. But just imagine a modern-day Great Gatsby??

I know that the 1920s part is basically an essential part of the story.

Technically the latest adaptation with Leonardo DiCaprio as Jay Gatsby was sort of more modern, but it still took place in the 1920s.

The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

This is yet another classic novel that I’ve never seen ANY sort of adaptation of. Not because that most of them are old it’s just that in my experience, they’ve been super hard to find or get a hold of.

The Phantom of the Opera

Okay there’s technically been quite a few modern takes on Phantom buuuuut they’re maybe not the best…lol i.e. Phantom of the Megaplex

Also in case you wanted to read some modern retellings of classic novels, here a few that you should check out and look out for!

Pride by Ibi Zoboi (Pride & Prejudice)

The Last Summer of the Garrett Girls by Jessica Spotswood (Little Women)

Charlotte Holmes series by Brittany Cavallaro (Sherlock Holmes)

Not Now, Not Ever by Lily Anderson (The Importance of Being Earnest)

  1. Yesss, Clueless is the best 90’s movie ๐Ÿ’–

I love this list! And now I low key want Netflix to make modern adaptions of all of Jane Austen’s novels – that would be amazing.

I loved American Street, so I’m super excited for Pride. And I’m in love with the cover!

    • I had to mention Clueless in here just because its ICONIC and the ultimate modern adaptation.

Thanks! Yes Netflix needs to get on that.

Yes the cover for Pride is so stunning!

  2. I love the Charlotte Holmes series but I haven’t read many retellings. I’m also going to check out some of the movies you mentioned! I haven’t seen most of them but Bride & Prejudice seems cool and so does She’s the Man. I think it would be cool if more classics had movies based on them โ€“ย it might even encourage people to check them out.

  3. Drop everything and watch the 1995 Persuasion with Ciaran Hinds as Wentworth. It is perfection. It feels a little low budget (most of the cast went without makeup, it’s filmed in that 90s “everything is in focus” way, instead of today’s shallow-depth-of-focus way) but Wentworth will slay youuuuu. (I did not like the 2007 version, even though it’s prettier. It made no sense in a lot of places.)

Also I love your pronouncement for the new S&S. “And make it gay.” From your lips to some amazing author’s ears! I want this book.

  4. I love Clueless and I’ve read Emma so I can’t believe I didn’t realise the former was was a modern adaption of the latter!! My mind has been blown!
I love this list, I definitely have to agree on Great Gatsby. It’s one of my favourite classics and a modern adaption would just ruin me (in the best way possible!!) ๐Ÿ˜€

    • I didn’t realize it either until I saw some website point it out and I immediately started seeing the similarities.

The Great Gatsby is one of my favorites as well ๐Ÿ˜€ I just want more Gatsby content in my life.
