Top 5 Tuesday – Tropes I Want More Of

top 5 tuesday

Top 5 Tuesday is hosted by Shanah @ Bionic Bookworm. Here is the list of topics for this month!

This week’s topic is: Tropes I Want to See More Of

I love talking about my favorite tropes and also my favorite tropes that I think are underrated so this was a great topic for me!

1. Hate to Love / Enemies to Lovers

My most favorite romance trope EVER. It’s such a classic trope I never get tired of seeing TBH. I know that there’s been A LOT of this trope in more recent YA fantasy novels like The Cruel Prince by Holly BlackΒ (I know I’m going to read it soon!) I would love it see in more contemporary settings as well though.

2. Villains Who Don’t Get a Redemption Arc

I actually LOVE redemption arcs (shoutout to Zuko!!) but I think it’s just as good for a villain to be purely a villain and not give zero fucks about turning into a good guy. So I would love to see more villains just staying villains.

3. Unlikable Female Characters

Give me all the wonderfully unapologetic, no-fucks-given unlikable female characters who may do some morally grey things or may just be a typical teenage girl who does typical teenage girl things that somehow result in people hating her for some reason… The female characters that are hated by Goodreads reviewers. I will protect you!!

4. Open-Ended/Ambiguous Endings

I have to admit while I do have a love-hate relationship with ambiguous endings, I do think I actually quite enjoy speculating and trying to interpret endings like those. My recent favorite use of this trope was Sadie by Courtney Summers.Β

5. Road Trip or basically a Journey Type Story

I actually really love a journey type story, i.e. Lord of the Rings trilogy. I’m currently reading Shadow of the Fox by Julie KagawaΒ and it’s basically a quest-like story.

Thanks for reading!

Sav

  1. I love all of these tropes! Hate to love is the best kind of romance, villains and unlikable girls are my faves (the more goodreads hates a female character, the more I love her), ambiguous endings are so much memorable to me (I’ll literally still think about them years later) and I love journey plots (how do people find them boring???) If you haven’t read it, you should check out Even the Darkest Stars – it gave me total Tolkien vibes 😊

    • Yes anytime Goodreads hates a female character I will immediately be protective over her!

I have no idea why people find journey plots boring. Oh well lol. I’ll enjoy them all then.

Thanks for the rec πŸ˜€ I’ve heard of it, but I definitely will check that out sometime! As soon as you said Tolkien vibes, I decided I need to read this book ASAP lol

  2. Fantastic post! Unlikeable female characters is a good one – because they have such quirky personalities and it’s so interesting to read about! I also did a post – feel free to check it out πŸ™‚

  3. Hey Sav, this is such a great list. I agree I never tire of hate to love romance trope. I was trying to think of a modern one but could only think of manga, lol. I haven’t read a ton of contemporary lately. I have to agree with Sophie above too though… Forest of a Thousand Lanterns has an unapologetic b*tch for a MC!! ❀

    • Thanks!!! πŸ˜€ πŸ’œ

Yeah I can’t think of a modern use of that trope either, although I’m sure there’s plenty out there. The first pairing that comes to mind whenever I think of hate to love is always Lizzie and Mr. Darcy from Pride & Prejudice lol.

I can’t wait to read Forest of a Thousand Lanterns now! I may have to add it to my October TBR.
