The Liebster Award

Hey y’all I hope everyone is having a good morning/day/afternoon/evening/night! I’m so appreciative and excited to be doing the Liebster Award once more.

I was nominated by Yna @ Yna the Mood Reader and I appreciate it very much 🙂 Please check out Yna’s amazing and stunning blog.

The Liebster Award is the best way to discover new blogs and help to support other bloggers by recognizing them.

RULES

1) Thank the blogger who nominated you.
2) Answer the questions from the person who nominated you.
3) Nominate 5-11 bloggers who have less than 200 followers.
4) Tell your nominees through social media.
5) Ask 11 new questions for your nominees.

What made you start writing about books?

I can’t quite remember but I’ve always been interested in writing in general and also talking about books but I know I would never have the charisma or courage to be a BookTuber so I found out more about the book blogging community and decided to join in.

What is your favorite ice cream flavor?

I really like Ben & Jerry’s Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough. I highly recommend because its like basically eating cookie dough but without the risk of salmonella.

What is your Hogwarts House?

So I just recently found out that I’m a Hufflepuff which sort of disappoints me because I feel like I’m more Ravenclaw but the sorting hat doesn’t lie. But I’ve decided to embrace the Hufflepuff life. Shout out to all my fellow Hufflepuffs.

Who are your top 3 favorite authors?

I’m fixing to make my answer more compliciated than it needs to be but I haven’t really found an author yet that I’d consider to be a favorite since most of the ones I do like I have maybe only read 1 book by them or just one series but I’m going to mention 3 authors I thoroughly enjoy and are ones that I want to read more of.

  1. Renée Watson – I absolutely adore Piecing Me Together and she has written many other YA/MG books that I’m interested in. But I loved her writing in Piecing Me Together because while its not a lush writing style its so simply well thought out.
  2. Libba Bray – The Diviners series was what really got me back into reading so I have to mention Libba Bray. Libba’s thorough research into the 1920s is rich, her writing is atmospheric, and she has created such a diverse, complex cast of characters.
  3. Courtney Summers – I’ve only read Sadie which I know she has many other great stuff but Sadie really hooked me. The way Courtney Summers writes about difficult and hard topics is powerful. Sadie gives off such visceral and raw emotions and I really want to see more books like this.

What are the top 5 most used apps on your phone?

  1. Twitter
  2. Spotify
  3. Animal Crossing Pocket Camp
  4. Pinterest
  5. WordPress

What is the best thing about the city you were born in?

Nothing. LMAO I mean I live in a small Southern U.S. town there’s not really much to do and the people are pretty much awful (you know racist, homophobic, and any other prejudices) But I love the scenery of my town. Its gorgeous and I love driving around town. Also my library because its where I work!

What is one book that you wish you can experience reading again for the first time?

Sadie by Courtney Summers. Just an amazing read from start to finish that and every twist and turn is both marvelous and heart wrenching.

What is one fictional universe you would want to spend your life in?

This will be cliche as hell but The Wizarding World of Harry Potter of course. Especially now since the whole wizarding war is over and its just chill magic shit.

What is a decision that you regret doing?

As someone with generalized anxiety disorder I regret a majority of things on a daily basis. That’s just my life. But I think I really regret not getting my license as soon as I turned 16. But it’s also something I can still remedy. Shout out to my fellow bloggers who are over 16 and can’t drive. I’m 23 and I still don’t even have a learner’s permit.

If you could have a never-ending candle that smelled like anything you wanted, what fragrance would you want it to be?

Sparkling amber. Ever since I bought this one candle from Bed Bath and Body Works that was called Istanbul, the scent was Sparkling Amber so I’ve always loved that scent.

What are you looking forward to in the coming months?

Quite a few things. 1) Hopefully cooler weather but I live in FL and its still hot in the fall/winter usually. 2) Family coming down for Thanksgiving 3) The possibility of going back to college in the winter.

I nominate the following. Please check them all out!

  1. moonlight & moths
  2. Abookblog
  3. All the Books and Pineapple
  4. All Things Annabelle

HERE ARE MY QUESTIONS

  1. Who was your favorite first author?
  2. If you had to name your children (or pet if you don’t want children) after characters in a book or series, which book/series and what names would you chose?
  3. What is the most random book purchase you made?
  4. What’s your phone background?
  5. What is a standalone you wish was a series?
  6. Coffee or tea?
  7. What are you currently doing?
  8. What is the hardest in your opinion about blogging?
  9. Which two or more authors would you like to see collaborate on a book?
  10. How is the weather where live right now?
  11. What is your perfect reading environment?

Thanks for reading 😀

Behind the Blogger Tag

I’m here with a tag!!! Thanks to Ally @ Ally Writes Things for the nomination!! 🙂

THE RULES

  • Thank the person who nominated you
  • Answer all the questions down below
  • Pingback to the creator: Ellyn @ Allonsythornraxx
  • Nominate 5+ bloggers you’d like to know more about, to do this tag

WHY DID YOU START BLOGGING & WHY HAVE YOU KEPT BLOGGING?

I wanted to have a way to talk about books since I don’t have many in my life who read books and I thought that starting a blog would be the best way to interact with other readers. Also I wanted to write more, especially reviews, so blogging is the best way to do those things. Blogging has been so great and I’ve discovered new books, interacting with great people in the book blogging community, and it’s just pure fun.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE TYPE OF BLOG POST TO WRITE?

Recommendation posts all the way. It’s so easy and fun to gush about your favorite books and yell at others to go out and read them.

I also enjoy writing my Favorite Blog Posts of the Month posts because it’s a good feeling to support other bloggers out there and seeing people feel validated is so nice. I’ve missed out on these posts this year but they’ll start back up very soon.

WHAT ARE YOUR TOP 3 FAVOURITE BLOG POSTS?

Time to get honest here and say that I’ve never been fully satisfied with any of my posts. Mainly because I tend to not do very original posts, since I usually do the weekly meme posts such as Top Ten Tuesday, etc. But these three are some posts that I did enjoy writing up and I hope others thought so too:

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVOURITE THINGS TO DO TO RELAX?

Some basic things like listening to music, watching a movie or show. I also enjoy making lists. I have so many notebooks and random sheets of paper filled with lists. Playing video games especially Animal Crossing Pocket Camp because it’s a stres-free, chill kind of game. I also like watching ASMR videos.

WHAT ARE 3 OF YOUR FAVOURITE THINGS?

My family. My pets. Coffee.

WHAT ARE YOUR PROUDEST BLOGGING MOMENTS?

I’m a very simple person so I have to say things like getting my first comment because I didn’t think anyone would interact with me. BTW I have to give a shoutout to Ally because she was the first person to ever comment on one of my posts!! 🙂

Posting reviews in general I’m very proud of because I’m always nervous every time I post one.

Reaching over 100 followers has been a very unbelievable moment for me and I can’t wait to see if I ever get more followers.

WHAT ARE YOUR HOBBIES OUTSIDE OF BLOGGING?

I don’t really think I have any other hobbies outside of blogging and reading. I think I should start up knitting or something like that.

DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONALITY IN 3 WORDS

Introverted. Patient. Open-minded.

WHAT ARE YOUR TOP 3 PET PEEVES

  1. Being late for anything. I think it’s just because of my anxiety but I HATE being late and I kind of hate when other people are running late. I like being early to stuff so I know where to go and whatnot.
  2. People who don’t tip. Really pisses me off.
  3. People who smack on their gum. Please stop!! This happens at my workplace a lot.

WHAT’S SOMETHING YOUR FOLLOWERS DON’T KNOW ABOUT YOU?

There aren’t many things I can actually do, but here are some things that I can’t do: I can’t drive, I can’t ride a bike, and I can’t swim very well.

I’m going to tag:

Aurora @ Aurora Librialis
Meaghan @ The Words Gremlin
Carly @ Reading Is Kind of My Thing
Consu @ Paper Eyed Girl
Jess @ The Book of Jess

Book Postscript Tag

Hey everyone! It’s been quite a while since I last posted. You know, life and whatnot gets in the way sometimes unfortunately.

I was tagged by the always amazing Aurora! Thank you so much for the opportunity to do this tag 🙂 This tag seems perfect because I really didn’t do much a wrap-up for 2018 and this will help me reflect at reading and blogging from last year.

1. The longest book you read this year and the book that took you the longest to finish.

On a Sunbeam – 544 pages. Even for a graphic novel that’s pretty hefty.

The Unexpected Everything – August 15-September 22.

2. A book you read in 2018 that was outside your comfort zone.

This novel is told in verse and I didn’t expect to really enjoy or understand it but this became a favorite read. I highly recommend this story. But beware of triggering content such as sexual assault; depression; abuse.

3. How many books did you re-read in 2018?

I don’t typically re-read books but I do reread manga. I also didn’t keep track of them this year on Goodreads. So here’s a few volumes of manga I re-read randomly throughout the year.

4. Favorite re-read of 2018

The same answers above. I enjoy all of four of these manga series for different reasons.

5. A book you read for the first time in 2018 that you look forward to re-reading in the future.

SOOOO MANY but I’ll share just a few because I think contemporaries are the easiest kinds of books for me to re-read.

6. Favorite single short story or novella that you read in 2018.

I don’t think this honestly counts but since I didn’t read any short stories or novellas I’ll use this as my answer because it was the shortest book I read this year at 96 pages.

7. Mass Appeal: A book you liked and would recommend to a wide variety of readers.

I think I chose Sadie because I’ve seen it on many other bloggers’ favorites/wrap-up lists. For a good reason this is book that deserves to be read. It may not be for everyone because of the content in it and its a rough read but I think its one that a wide variety of readers could get into.

8. Specialized Appeal: A book you liked but would be hesitant to recommend to just anyone.

While I enjoyed the slow-pacing and the gothic romance, I don’t think that this is a book for everyone.

9. Reflect on your year as a bookish content creator (goals met, good/bad memories, favorite videos blog posts you made, etc).

2018 was my best year for blogging. I gained more amazing followers and I learned so much more about blogging. I can’t wait to see what 2019 has in store for me.

I enjoyed making my Favorite Blog Posts of the Month posts. Those really reflected the amazing content of other book bloggers and the support in the bookish community is incredible. The weekly memes such as Top Ten Tuesday, Top 5 Tuesday, and Top 5 Wednesday are always fun for me.

While I do have a majority of good memories I do think I should share some of my shortcomings. I definitely had some reading and blogging slumps throughout 2018 and I hope I can at least improve on my activity in 2019.

10. Tag some fellow bookish content creators.

I’m going to tag Ally, Meaghan, and Ben!

Sunshine Blogger Award!

SUNSHINE BLOGGER AWARD

sunshine blogger award logo 2

Tagged by the amazing Dezzy @ The Thoughtful Voice 🙂 Thank you so much for the nomination!!! Check out their blog!

RULES

  1. Thank the blogger who nominated you in a blog post and link back to their blog.
  2. Answer the 11 questions the blogger asked you.
  3. Nominate 11 new blogs to receive the award and write them 11 new questions.
  4. List the rules and display the sunshine blogger award logo in your post/or on your blog.

1. What’s your favorite type of blog post to write, and why?

Recommendations posts! They’re pretty easy and also can be themed and I appreciate having a theme to work with. I’m also a person who just loves list-making.

2. Do you usually reread books? Why or why not?

No but it’s mainly because I have this urgency to always read books I haven’t read yet. Otherwise the only time I have ever re-read a book was for The Diviners series where I re-read The Diviners before Lair of Dreams was released since there was a HUGE gap between release dates. But most series I don’t normally have to re-read because somehow I can contain all basic information for the series or just remember the info as I’m reading.

3. What’s a book that made you an emotional wreck and/or broke your heart?

Listen…I’m already a huge emotional mess of a person and books that are purposefully heartbreaking and tragic are bound to make me feel so many things. The last book that made me go “this hurts so much” was Sadie by Courtney Summers.

4. What’s a book that brought you the utmost joy (you couldn’t stop smiling after reading it)?

The Unexpected Everything by Morgan Matson was so cheesy and I think I read it at a time where I needed a feel-good summer-y YA rom-com.

5. Standalone books or book series?

Standalones. Series are definitely fun but I think standalones are less stress for me.

6. If you could unread a book, what would it be and why?

Eleanor & Park is always one that comes to mind when I think of a book I wish I had never picked up. It was not worth the discomfort I got from the racism and other B.S. that happens in this book.

7. How has your blogging style and writing voice changed since you first started blogging?

Maybe??? I mean I would hope so. I don’t know how to gauge my blogging style and writing voice to be honest. I feel like I’m just winging it.

8. How have your reading tastes changed ever since you started blogging?

I think just a little bit. Right now I’m confident in my reading tastes so much that I can explore new reads and be certain that I’ll enjoy most of them. I think blogging has helped me discover new books to help form my new reading tastes.

9. How did you discover your favorite author and/or favorite books?

BLOGGERS. So many awesome bloggers out there who have amazing taste (who of course will be tagged). Goodreads. Book Twitter!!! Especially Book Twitter.

10. What’s your favorite movie adaptation?

The Silence of the Lambs. I love thrillers and this film is art and has incredible acting and UGH. So good. I still haven’t read the book yet…I actually got it recently and I hope to read it soon.

11. List three favorite books and one song you associate with each of them!

Piecing Me Together by Renee Watson // Everything Is Everything by Lauryn Hill

Blood Water Paint by Joy McCullough // Shake It Out by Florence + The Machine

On a Sunbeam by Tillie Walden // Soft  Sounds from Another Planet by Japanese Breakfast

I tend to actually associate songs with books based on their covers which are not always accurate but I end up getting that song in my head the entire time reading the book :/

Now it’s time to nominate some bloggers 🙂 No pressure to do this if you don’t want to or if you’ve already done this!

Pages and Pugs

Book Blogger Test Tag

Hey everyone! Here’s a fun ol’ tag that I’m gonna do!

I was tagged by the wonderful Ace of Bens! Thank you so much!!! 😀 💜 💫

THE RULES:
1) Thank the person who nominated you and add a link to their blog.
2) Answer the questions asked on this post — don’t stress it’s quick!
3) Nominate and notify some peeps. 5 preferred.

WHAT ARE YOUR TOP 3 BOOK PET PEEVES?

  1. Long winding descriptions can be this for me sometimes. I do love lush and flowery words most of the time, but there’s been a few occasions where it’s gotten out of hand for me.
  2. nOT LiKe OthER gIRLS
  3. MISCOMMUNICATION. DEAR GOD.

NAME A PERFECT READING SPOT.

Definitely a nice bed by a wonderful with sunshine coming through with a blanket and the AC on. AKA my room.

GIVE 3 READING CONFESSIONS.

  1. I have never read the Harry Potter series. I’ve only seen the movies. Which I know is considered a crime in the book community lol. Forgive me please. I just know a lot because of the book community and basically the internet.
  2. Sometimes while I’m reading I have to reread a sentence/paragraph just to make sure I processed all the information correctly. This is probably why it takes me so long to read sometimes, unless it’s something I just want to quickly devour.
  3. I have a tendency to skip ahead a few pages from the page I’m reading just to see what I think is going to happen, happens or not. I have no shame.

WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU CRIED DURING A BOOK?

Yikes I guess this is another confession. Give me a tragic/emotional book and I will start a waterfall. I think the last book I cried during was Sadie. It had so much tragedy that felt so real and it the kind of tragedy that happens in society everyday.

NUMBER OF BOOKS ON YOUR BEDSIDE TABLE?

Currently, two on the bedside table. Which are An Enchantment of Ravens (which I’ve finished and can finally return to the library) and The Wicked Deep, which I’m still currently reading. Also my kindle which has a bunch of books that I don’t feel like counting right now lol.

FAVORITE READING SNACK?

Fruit like grapes or apples. Can be sticky so beware.

WHAT ARE 3 BOOKS YOU’D RECOMMEND TO ANYONE?

Piecing Me Together by Renee Watson

Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi

Shadow of the Fox by Julie Kagawa

3 of my favorite reads from this year that I think are not only accessible but also enjoyable for everyone!

PROVIDE A PICTURE OF YOUR BOOKSHELF.

My main bookshelf is a work in progress so here’s a picture of my bed’s little bookshelf (which is also a work in progress but at least in better shape!)

I’m also lacking some bookish knick knacks and items for it! 😢😢😢 Also sorry for the quality I took this at night!

Would You Rather? (Spooky Edition)

I know yesterday was the end of October, the end of Halloween. But that doesn’t mean spooky stuff has to end!

I saw Sara @ The Bibliophagist do this tag and it looked very fun!

This post somehow also turned into a recommendations post of me just listing off some of my Halloween favorites so there’s that too!

THRILLERS OR SUPERNATURAL(S)

This one is pretty hard difficult because while I love a good supernatural movie that gives me the creeps, I think I’ll have to go with thrillers. I especially enjoy psychological thrillers like The Silence of the Lambs, Psycho, The Shining, Rosemary’s Baby, Primal Fear, etc. etc.

we all go a little mad sometimes psycho gif

GHOSTS OR ZOMBIES?

Ghost are underrated in my opinion. I think we should get more ghost stories! I appreciate both friendly and angry, vengeful ghosts.

ghost gif 1

 VAMPIRES OR WEREWOLVES?

VAMPIRES for sure! I don’t think I’ve ever been that interested in werewolves (sorry werewolf fans! I did like Ginger Snaps and An American Werewolf in London though!) But most of my favorite Halloween movies and shows in general feature vampires (The Lost Boys; Fright Night + it’s 2011 remake; True Blood; What We Do in the Shadows; Interview with the Vampire)

what we do in the shadows gif 1.gif

WITCHES OR MONSTERS?

WITCHES! Witches are so emblematic of empowerment and sisterhood! I 💜 them. Gif courtesy of The Craft which is a very fun and cult-classic 90s witch flick!

WOULD YOU RATHER READ A BOOK WITH 13 CHAPTERS OR WITH A BLACK CAT ON THE COVER?

Definitely a book with a black cat on the cover! I love black cats (I currently own one!) I hate the fact that some people believe that superstition enough that apparently black cats don’t get adopted enough because of it. But they’re awesome! Also reading a book with only 13 chapters isn’t fun for me.

WOULD YOU RATHER READ A SPOOKY BOOK IN THE DARK WITH ONLY A CANDLE FOR LIGHT OR BY YOURSELF IN A LOCKED BRIGHTLY LIT ROOM?

I mean the most logical choice would be locked in a brightly lit room because I need my eyes, but I did a while ago read a book with just one candle lit, granted I was reading off my Kindle so I didn’t damage my vision! Highly recommend that for sure.

img_7870

WOULD YOU RATHER FACE YOUR WORST FEARS OR BE TRAPPED IN THE MIND OF A KILLER?

DEAR GOD. This question is messed up LMAO. How about neither? Can I just say neither??

WOULD YOU RATHER WATCH A SCARY MOVIE OR READ A SCARY BOOK?

Another tough one. I guess I’ll go with a scary movie. But it has to be during the day time and someone needs to be in the house with me.

WOULD YOU RATHER READ SPOOKY BOOKS DURING THE FALL TIME OR ALL YEAR?

Reading these books during the fall makes for such a perfect reading atmosphere but I definitely love spooky books all year long.

WOULD YOU RATHER READ 10 SPOOKY BOOKS IN OCTOBER OR 10 SPOOKY BOOKS ALL YEAR?

Read 10 spooky books all year!!!!

The Weather in Books Tag

book tags and challenges 1

I was tagged by Meaghan @ Words Gremlin, thanks so much and sorry that this is super late!

Sunshine: A Book That Made You Smile

The Unexpected Everything by Morgan Matson

I got exactly what I wanted out of this book which was fluffy and lighthearted feelings and cheesy rom-com antics. *chef’s kiss* Perfect for a summer read!

Rain: A Book You Couldn’t Put Down

shadow of the fox julie kagawa cover

Shadow of the Fox by Julie Kagawa

A fun, adventurous, Japanese inspired fantasy that kept me reading into the early A.M. hours. It hooked me from the very first chapter until the end!

Wind: A Book That Blew You Away

Little & Lion by Brandy Colbert

The writing in this was SOOO great. I’m officially in love with Brandy Colbert’s storytelling. Her characters felt so real and natural. I typically enjoy these contemporaries that have a slice-of-life and this was no exception. I also highly recommend listening to the audio book because the narrator is so wonderful.

Hurricane: A Tragic Book

sadie cover

Sadie by Courtney Summers

This is definitely one of the most tragic books I’ve read this year. This a YA thriller that tackles some very difficult topics such as sexual abuse, grief, and addiction. The ending is definitely one of the most shocking and bittersweet endings I’ve read recently.

Blizzard: A Book You Had High Expectations For

hunted

Hunted by Meagan Spooner

I DNF’d this one about 5 chapters in. I couldn’t get into the story because the characters didn’t interest me. The pacing felt super slow, since there were just a bunch of long winded descriptions of the environment and the day in the life of the character. I always hate to say that a book “bored” me, but this one bored me. I was expecting to like this one because I saw some reviewers I trust give this 4/5 stars and I like Beauty and the Beast. I may try this again if I don’t have other books on my queue.

Tornado: A Book You Didn’t Like at First but Ended Up Loving

letters to the lost

Letters to the Lost by Brigid Kemmerer

This book has been one of my most surprising reads from this year because I didn’t expect that I would end up really enjoying it. At first I thought it would be a typical coming of age romantic drama and that is exactly what it is but it’s done well. I felt very attached to the main characters, Juliet and Declan.

I’m going to tag…

Ben @ Ace of Bens

Dezzy @ The Thoughtful Voice

Lily @ Sprinkles of Dreams

Aurora @ Aurora Librialis

Ally @ Ally Writes Things

No pressure to do this tag!!!

Also anyone else is free to do this. If you want it to be “official” you can comment down below and I’ll tag you.

Trick or Treat! Book Tag

trick or treat book tag logo 2

I saw Merline @ Merline Reads do this tag and its perfect for this month! I love the idea of this one. This tag was created by Bookish Pisces so check out their post as well! What you do for this tag is rate books either a treat (a book you liked) or a trick (a book that you didn’t like). So I just decided to pick from the books I’ve read this year, my most memorable and most forgettable…

Shadow of the Fox by Julie Kagawa

shadow of the fox julie kagawa cover

TREAT!

This was a fun, adventurous Japanese inspired story that made me so happy to read. I became so invested in the characters and I can’t wait for the sequel!

Girl at the Grave by Teri Bailey Black

girl at the grave

TRICK.

I didn’t hate this one, but I didn’t love it or really even like it that much. I expected so much more from this because it sounded to me like a great YA gothic story but it ended up being more like an angsty teen romance that just happened to have some murders in it.

Piecing Me Together by Renee Watson

piecing me together

TREAT!

I’m not going to stop talking about this book until I get more people to read it. One of my favorites reads this year if not my most favorite read. Such a powerful story with one of my favorite main characters ever, Jade. TREAT YOURSELVES TO THIS AMAZING STORY!!

Hunted by Meagan Spooner

hunted

TRICK.

The only book I’ve DNF’d this year (thus far). I didn’t enjoy the slow pacing of this even though I never usually mind a slow-paced story. The story and its characters didn’t grab me enough for me to want to invest time in reading this. I was pretty disappointed when I had decided to DNF this one because I saw that the reviews for this were mostly positive and I expected to enjoy this because its a Beauty and the Beast retelling which is a favorite of mine.

I Spy Book Challenge

Hi everyone! So this is a fun little challenge that I am so ready to do! I was tagged by Dezzy @ The Thoughtful Voice for this and I appreciate it so much! Please go check their blog out! I was tagged back in June and I’m sorry for being late on this but now that I have some time to do this, I can’t wait!

I plan on timing myself using my iPhone to see how long it takes me because I’m pretty sure it’ll take me more than the given time to actually find them all, but I’ll attempt to do it within 5 minutes.

How to do this challenge:

Find a book that contains (either on the cover or in the title) an example for each category. You must have a separate book for all 20, get as creative as you want, and do it within five minutes!

MY RESULTS:

img_6137

Yeah I timed myself and I  did better than I thought I would, so there’s that.
