F – Five things you’re happy or grateful for this week.

Before I get started I just want to talk about the injustice that has been given to Breonna Taylor this week. It’s so infuriating and frustrating to see this Black woman get no ABSOLUTELY NO justice for her death. After all this time with people who used her murder as a meme, as a martyr and some people just as a means to make themselves look better. It’s a fucking disgrace. It’s painful. I am just so angry for her and her loved ones. So today I’ll like everyone to keep in mind the system in America where we have allowed police to kill Black citizens.

I’m going to link the Louisville Bail Fund and also update this post with some petitions and places to donate. But I know that can never be enough to help mend the amount of injustice that has taken place. Black Lives Matter. Black Women Matter.

F – Feature your latest book obsession (it doesn’t have to be your current read)

My latest bookish obsession is actually my current read which is MEXICAN GOTHIC by Silvia Moreno-Garcia! I’m slowly reading through this and savoring it because it’s such a good gothic story that embraces the genre while also being a critique of colonialism and white privilege and I’m probably going to have a raving review for it in October! I have yet to finish but I am adoring the writing, the characters particularly our heroine Noemí Taboada (she is a boss ass bitch!!) and the atmosphere. I am also finding the best fan art for it on Twitter!

I – Indicate which book/s you are looking forward to reading this weekend.

I’m still working on finishing MEXICAN GOTHIC but I do hope to fit in some books I have gotten from the library such as BURN OUR BODIES DOWN, GIRL, SERPENT, THORN and A WICKED MAGIC. As you can tell I’m in spooky mode when it comes to reading!

F – Favorite quote of the week/day

The most appropriate quote for this politically tumultuous time comes from a most recent watch of ENOLA HOLMES on Netflix (which I recommend!) Sherlock Holmes is talking about how politics bore him and this character, Edith tells it to him straight why that’s such a white male privileged take!

“Because you don’t know what it is to be without power. Because you have no interest in changing a world that suits you so well.”

F – Five things you’re happy or grateful for this week.

All the things I’m grateful for this week have been film and show related. Media has such a strong grasp on me right now.

1) ENOLA HOLMES – As mentioned above I recently watched this and it was quite delightful. I may do a full review on it just for fun. Not a perfect film by any means but it was still very enjoyable and it just made me feel a little better. Millie Bobby Brown knocks it out here and she’s going to be starring in another YA novel adaptation that she’s producing which is so cool.

2) BRIGHT STAR – Another film that I’m working on reviewing because it was so beautiful and I just discovered it by randomly looking for period drama as on Amazon Prime! This is a gorgeous but also sad film about John Keats and his short lived romance with his muse, Fanny Brawne. There’s so much I want to discuss about this film but if you’re looking for an underrated biopic, this is one that you should watch!

3) PRIDE & PREJUDICE (just everything P&P) – I will sometimes get in a kick for everything P&P and I recently watched the 2005 film and the 1995 miniseries again and they always cheer me up! I know that the debate between which of these adaptations is the best always comes up but I like them both for their own reasons! I do prefer the 2005 version in terms of filmmaking and the 1995 for being a more straight and thorough adaptation of the novel. But anyways look at them!!!!

4) SUCCESSION – I started this show on Sunday (the day of the Emmy’s when it won some awards) and it is something. The way I’m going to describe will most likely turn some people away from watching because at first I was apprehensive of watching it because it’s exactly what I’m about to tell you it is: rich white people doing rich white people things. But make no mistake that this is a darkly humorous and satirical comedy about these kind of privileged white people, so you’re able to laugh at these people screwing up and failing because they’re terrible people! You don’t want any of them to succeed and I think the show is so much better for not trying to find ways to redeem them. The show actively is telling you to not root for them. It’s somehow so brilliant in a time when the privileged keep doing stupid shit.

5) THE OWL HOUSE – Easily one of my favorite and in my honest opinion one of the best children’s animated series right now! The first season just ended at the end of August but I highly recommend it if you want creepy, witchy autumn vibes right now. It’s just a good and engaging show. I have a full review wrote up for in October so be on the lookout for that one 👀.

Have a happy weekend and happy reading 🙂

This is kind of hard for me to answer right but uhhh I guess the library? Which I’m always obsessed with because 1) its the library which means free books 2) I work at one. I’ve been getting more books from the library lately since there has been some great releases. Maybe I’ll do a library haul in the future (?)

I – Indicate which book/s you are looking forward to reading this weekend

Road Out of Winter by Alison Stine is my weekend read. I have a blog tour coming up for it so yeah I should definitely get on it. It’s a bleak, winter, near future dystopian. Perfect read for a summer full of sweltering heat and pandemic illnesses. There’s a few other books that I have my eye on that I may pick up but it’ll depend on my mood.

F – Favorite quote of the week

I discovered this on the Twitter timeline and I had to retweet. It’s been stuck with for a while so I might as well share. I feel like its super fitting for the time we’re living in and how much of a bizarre summer it’s been.

I have done nothing all summer but wait for myself to be myself again

3) MY PETS
4) PEOPLE WHO WEAR MASKS

It’s been A LONG TIME since I’ve last participated in this meme and I’m excited to get back into it. However today’s edition will be a little different since I’ll technically be recapping last week since this week I haven’t read ANYTHING. I’ve been basically working and sleeping. I had one planned for the previous week anyways but I never got around to typing it up. So I’m here to make up for that.

BOOK JOURNALS / READING JOURNALS!!!

So I decided to start one for this year to help keep track of books I read as well as for my blog. I’ve been looking up various BookTubers and other book bloggers who journal as part of their reading/blogging/writing and I love seeing how creative everyone is! It’s really inspiring. I hope to make a post one day to highlight some of y’all’s creativity and also maybe show off my journal one day.

I – Indicate which book/s you are looking forward to reading this weekend

This will be the only answer to actually change from what I had last week but I’m hoping to finish my arc of Don’t Read the Comments by Eric Smith as well as The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden.

F – Favorite quote of the week/day

Last week and the week before I read, The Weight of the Stars by K. Ancrum and Tweet Cute by Emma Lord so I thought I’d share two quotes from each book that I like.

“It’s weird, how you have no idea how far you’ve come until suddenly you can’t find the way back.”

Tweet Cute by Emma Lord

“Fighting for yourself is another way of loving yourself.”

The Weight of the Stars by K. Ancrum

F – Five things I’m happy or grateful for this week

  2. My family

That’s this week/last week’s edition stay tuned for more on some other Friday!!! Thanks for reading 🙂

F – Feature your latest book obsession

There’s so many 2020 books that I’m anticipating (and I’ll be coming out with some lists in the future) but one that I have had on my mind a lot recently is Forest of Souls by Lori M. Lee. I follow her Twitter account and her tweets talking about the book fascinate me so much. There’s the found family trope, horror vibes, girls supporting girls, stabby girls, and DINOS.

It’s release date is June 23, 2020 and is now available for preorder!

I – Indicate which book/s you are looking forward to reading this weekend

I have many many many books that are priority reads (ARCs, library books) but I’m really hoping to getting around to The Storm Crow and/or Wilder Girls. It’s going to be a long weekend in that while it’s also labor there is a hurricane coming into my state so I’m basically preparing myself for the worst.

F – Favorite quote of the week/day

So if you didn’t happen to know, today is Mary Shelley’s 222nd birthday!! Being THE iconic badass gothic lady who invented science fiction I thought it would be fitting to share a quote from her. There’s great ones to choose from but I decided to go with the following because it’s cool.

“Beware; for I am fearless, and therefore powerful.”

F – Five things I’m happy or grateful for this week

  1. My job
  2. My family
  3. My pets
  4. Coffee
  5. Hurricane snacks

That’s about it for my week. Hope you all have a great weekend and for my fellow Floridians, stay safe!!!

F – Feature your latest book obsession

I read this wonderfully whimsical and cozy book for Ghibli-a-Thon. I loved as much as I enjoy the Ghibli adaptation. I highly recommend everyone read the book because it does have quite a few major differences than the film and I think this book kind of goes unnoticed.

I – Indicate which book/s you are looking forward to reading this weekend

I haven’t actually put much thought into what I would be reading this weekend. My mood is very iffy right now so it’ll kind of depend on what I’m in the mood to read. But I know that I at least want to finish the books I didn’t get to during Ghibli-a-thon, one of which, is Wild and Crooked by Leah Thomas. I also have been itching to read The Lost Coast by Amy Rose Capetta, because its all about queer witches.

F – Favorite quote of the week/day

Another book I read from last week was Final Draft by Riley Redgate, which I read for the Dragons & Tea Book Club. It was a great book about anxiety, exploring sexuality, and writing. It gave me a lot of feelings.

“Out there, danger wasn’t something that erupted purposelessly in parking lots or at traffic intersections; it was peril, pure and moral and invigorating. Unifying. Out there, love bridged the space between planets, and betrayal risked the destruction of universes. Life was lived along a spectrum so vibrant it felt ultraviolet. How could the world outside the window seem anything but gray in comparison?”

F – Five things I’m happy or grateful for this week

GOOD OMENS

One of the most enjoyable series I’ve watched in a while. I love this absurdist, wacky, but light hearted series about the end of the world. Aziraphale and Crowley are some of my favorite characters and they have quite the slowburn romantic story. It’s a ridiculously fun and hopeful show that I highly recommend!

FLEABAG

I finally caved in and watched Fleabag. It’s a witty, sometimes cynical British drama-comedy about a woman (Fleabag) who breaks the fourth-wall as she navigates love, her sexuality, grief, and her messy life. S2 was especially my favorite because of the Hot Priest. (yes he’s just known as the Hot Priest). But Fleabag herself is a wonderfully complex and misunderstood character who goes through a lot during the show. She’s the emblematic “unlikeable” female character. Again I highly recommend this for not just its humor but also for its messages on being human, reconciling grief, and figuring yourself out.

STUDIO GHIBLI

So during Ghibli-a-Thon I also set out to watch some of my favorite Ghibli films. I just love the feeling that these films give me and also how much I’ve been influenced by these films. I just want to live in the worlds of these films.

RAINY WEATHER

Its been scorching hot where I live and the rainstorms have helped a lot. It’s also perfect weather to read those cozy, good feeling books. Or a moody, dreary book. Rainy weather is my favorite weather for reading besides, a sunny day with a cool breeze.

ALL OF YOU WHO READ MY BLOG

I will always appreciate everyone who reads my blog and interacts with me in general. I’ve been so lucky and fortunate that I found a place to share my love and opinions on books. So this is a shout-out to all of you who’ve stuck with out despite some setbacks. I know I’m not the most active or talkative, but I’m working on that and I will continue to strive to make my blog even better.

Thanks for reading and let me know some of y’all’s weekend plans and what you have been reading or plan on reading!

I read When the Moon Was Ours at the beginning of the month for the Dragons & Tea Book Club on Goodreads. The hype for this book is well deserved and it was such a lush, gorgeous read. I can’t wait to read more by Anna-Marie McLemore.

I – Indicate which book/s you are looking forward to reading this weekend

I have a lot planned but mainly these two which are ARCs that I need to get out of the way.

F – Favorite quote of the week/day

When the Moon Was Ours contains several beautiful quotes so I have to at least share one quote. I decided to go with the author’s dedication since it would be less spoiler-y but its also a poignant dedication that I just love seeing.

“To the boys who get called girls,
the girls who get called boys,
and those who live outside these words.
To those called names,
and those searching for names of their own.
To those who live on the edges,
and in the spaces in between.
I wish for you every light in the sky”

F – Five things I’m happy or grateful for this week

  1. Game of Thrones Season 8 – the final season has begun and I really enjoyed the season premiere for the most part. I can’t wait to see what is to come and how it’s all going to end.
  2. Homecoming: A Film by Beyonce – This is the rock-documentary of Beyonce’s Coachella performance and WOW. It really shows how much work ethic that Beyonce has and it is such a powerful performance.
  3. Weyes Blood’s new album Titanic Rising – I’ve been listening to this one a lot lately and I saw someone desccribe this as Joni Mitchell meets ABBA and I think that fits so perfectly.
  4. My parents – I’ve been having a rough-ish week but I had my parents for support and I always appreciate them so much.
  5. I don’t know what else to say but I am grateful for anyone who reads this lol.

Anyways that’s been my past couple of weeks thus far. Let me know how y’all are doing and what reading plans you have for the weekend.

What can I say?? This book was phenomenal. This book made me want to write more and put more words out there. I can’t recommend this enough. It’s won awards so that should give y’all some motivation to read The Poet X. I’m so excited to read her next book, With the Fire on High now.

I – Indicate which book/s you are looking forward to reading this weekend

I really want to get to reading Daisy Jones & The Six. I’m going to be listening to the audiobook since I’ve heard many people say that it’s the best way to take in the story.

Then there’s You’d Be Mine which I have the eARC for that I should really get to and also review!

F – Favorite quote of the week/day

I’m going to share just one of the several powerful quotes from The Poet X

“Late into the night I write and the pages of my notebook swell from all the words I’ve pressed onto them.
It almost feels like the more I bruise the page the quicker something inside me heals.”

F – Five things I’m happy or grateful for this week

Lush products

I started using Lush products a few weeks ago and I’m loving them. I got the American Cream shower lotion and body conditioner and I just love the smell.

My awesome coworker

My coworker who is super nice gave me these little composition notebooks. They’re so small and cute. I’m so grateful to have a co-worker like her!! Completely made my day.

10 Things I Hate About You

It was the 20th anniversary of the movie the other day and I still can’t believe it’s that old. It’s one of my favorite rom-coms and has inspired me in so many ways. I will always appreciate the character of Kat Stratford for introducing me to feminism back when I first watched this movie on YouTube.

Shrill

I mentioned this in my March Wrap-Up but it’s still something I’m thinking about because of its body positivity and humor. I can’t praise it enough.

Hearts Beat Loud

This was such a sweet heartwarming underrated gem of a movie featuring Nick Offerman and Kiersey Clemons as a father and daughter who make music and start a band together. The music in this movie is so good. Also Kiersey Clemons’ character has a girlfriend and they are adorable. There’s also Mitski and I love Mitski.

That was my week so far. Let me know how y’all are doing.

Neverworld Wake by Marisha Pessl was my most recent read and I enjoyed this so much. The different elements that helped make this story into what is was, were well-done. This is a story simply about life and death, the choices we make, and a great introspection into ourselves. Plus there’s the weird, surrealistic Neverworld Wake, a Groundhog Day experience that the characters go through. This has flawed and often times unlikeable characters but that’s honestly a plus for me because they are fleshed out and human.

I – Indicate which book/s you are looking forward to reading this weekend

I’m not entirely sure what other books I may read this weekend but I do have The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo on my TBR for the weekend because it’s a quick read and I just really want to read it. I’m going to be listening to the audiobook, narrated by Elizabeth Acevedo herself and I can’t wait to hear her tell her story.

F – Favorite quote of the week/day

“We are all anthologies. We are each a thousand pages long, filled with fairy tales and poetry, mysteries and tragedy, forgotten stories in the back no one will ever read.” – NEVERWORLD WAKE by Marisha Pessl.

F – Five things I’m happy or grateful for this week

  1. The Princess Bride – What a charming and classic feel-good movie! I re-watched this this week and I’m so glad I did because it was a great pick-me-up. I wish we had more movies made like this. (I know there movies like this but it seems like it’s so little at a time).
  2. Mob Psycho 100 II – The season is nearly over with but I love my sweet precious psychic child Mob and all the other weirdos.
  3. Coffee – This may seem basic but screw it, coffee helped me this week as it usually does and it deserves credit. Thanks coffee.
  4. Garnier Whole Blends Honey Shampoo – I’ve started using this recently and I LOVE IT. The smell of the honey is so wonderful and it makes my hair feel good.
  5. Cover Reveals – So many amazing cover reveals happened this week such as A River of Royal Blood by Amanda Joy, Song of the Crimson Flower by Julie C. Dao, Kingdom of Souls by Rena Barron, How to Be Remy Cameron by Julian Winters, Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo, and Ziggy, Stardust, and Me by James Brandon.

Let me know how your week has been and thanks for reading! 🙂
